Most of us settle for a smaller life than we were made for. Nearly everything I build is an argument against that.I am a software engineer in Austin. I lead engineering work at Tesla, and I founded Fusion Development Group, which is held to one rule: nothing we make can be a thing you are unable to walk away from.That rule came out of a conviction rather than a market analysis. I do not think people were made for dependence — on software, on a company, on anyone but God — so I would rather not spend my life building the thing that teaches them otherwise. It is an expensive position. It rules out the business model everyone recommends and it means shipping the part that makes us least necessary first.
The rest of me is less tidy. I write, I argue for sport, I get outside when Texas allows it, and every few years I go somewhere far enough that ordinary life loses its grip for a while. Three weeks across Norway did more to me than any conference has.I think most of us are quietly waiting for permission to want more than what we have settled into, and that the waiting is the problem. That is what I write about here, when I am not writing about software.
